Nordic Bride Customs

When you are getting married in Scandinavia, it’s important to pay attention to some of the edgier traditions. We asked bridal planner Mariella Gink to grant us the scoop on some of Sweden’s special norms

Before relationships in Viking days, the bride do take a bath to cleanse herself and symbolically rinse apart her female. Then she would leap into cool waters to reflect the transition into woman. Her hair was even a big deal. She may weave it into complex locks to depict her sexuality, and the more intricate her locks were, the better it boded for the partners. The grooms may wear a shirt and shorts made of wool or fabric. They did likewise bring their weapons.

In Norse lifestyle, it was common for people to send each of their customers home with items. This is a convention that carries on today. It is common to see a gift registry at Swedish ceremonies, but it’s not the norm to obtain huge economic achievements, as most people can afford to get themselves a current.

After the meeting, it’s time to observe! Swedish ceremonies are known for their lengthy, complex dinner parties. The hour might contain from eight to 12 remarks, screenings of video from the bachelor and bachelorette parties, games and songs. A friend of the couple is usually designated master of ceremonies to coordinate all the entertainment.

Another quirky Scandinavian wedding tradition is that whenever the groom or bride leaves a room for any reason, other men will line up to kiss them. This is one of our favorite things to capture on camera as a photographer because it’s so funny!
